In order to achieve their objectives, the Trustees always endeavour to purchase specialist medical equipment that will:

a) speed up diagnosis and operative procedures
b) reduce the degree of invasive surgery
c) minimise patient discomfort
d) shorten the duration of rehabilitation
e) provide advanced equipment to developing countries

Since its formation, Medi Tech Trust has donated various items of advanced medical equipment, primarily for use at various hospitals in Sussex, aimed at encouraging non-invasive surgical operations.

For use at Eastbourne District General Hospital

A Lisa RevoLix 70 Thulium Laser machine

Lisa RevoLix 70 Thulium LasersFor the first time a surgical laser was available for soft tissue surgery that unified all advantageous properties of existing laser principles in a single unit, resulting in:

• less blood loss
• quick recovery time
• outpatient surgery
• less postoperative care
• short cauterization time in BPH treatment

A Flexible UreterscopeA Flexible Ureteroscope

This is a special telescope that is passed through the urethra, bladder, and into the ureter to the kidney stone or to view the area of interest. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia. A stone breaker, grasper or laser is passed up the ureteroscope to perform the procedure. This is a minimally invasive procedure that makes use of natural channels in the body, so there are no cuts to the skin. It is a well tolerated and frequently performed procedure.

An Ultra Mini Percutaneous Set

When conventional therapies reach their limits, UMP expands the treatment range for the percutaneous removal of kidney stones.

Sphinx 30 Holmium LaserA Sphinx 30 Holmium Laser machine

The minimally invasive Holmium-YAG laser is based on the high absorption of the Holmium laser energy in water and in biological tissue containing water.

• In soft tissue surgery efficient vaporisation is achieved without deep penetration of the tissue
• Short laser pulse widths make the Sphinx highly effective and efficient in the fragmentation of stones
• Long laser pulse widths provide an excellent hemostasis in soft tissue surgery
• Due to the high absorption level, use of this machine enables safe operation

A Morcellator machine

Richard Wolf MorcellatorDuring minimally invasive or keyhole surgical operations, such as removing womb fibroids or during supracervical hysterectomy, this instrument crushes tissue and large hardened masses. It is also ideal for the removal of prostate tissue from the bladder after holmium laser use. The vacuum pump system allows precise control over the suction level and morcellation speed to facilitate the rapid, safe and efficient removal of tissue.
